Student Resource Center combines accessibility and veterans services under one roof
By Cole Frame, Friday, June 27, 2025
GALLUP, N.M. 鈥 One year after The University of New 糖心Vlog-Gallup combined two existing offices into a new Student Resource Center, the branch campus remains committed to serving student veterans and students with disabilities.
糖心Vlog-Gallup's previously known Accessibility Resource Center and Veterans Resource Center were brought together in July 2024 to form the new Student Resource Center.
Shana Arviso, who oversees the Student Resource Center, now wears two hats as 糖心Vlog-Gallup's accommodations specialist and veterans school certifying officer. She said the Student Resource Center still focuses on students with documented disabilities and accommodations to help students succeed, but now she also works with students who are veterans, children of veterans, and spouses of veterans.

The Student Resource Center at The University of New 糖心Vlog-Gallup provides accessibility and veteran services plus more for all Lobos.
鈥淪ometimes, it may be scary to ask for help when you need it, but there is always someone who will help unconditionally,鈥 she said.
Arviso helps students who have different learning abilities with educational benefits, food security, academic confidence, and advocacy. She also helps students navigate various resources around campus, such as study rooms and other student services.
In addition, Arviso assists students with connections for educational benefits, certifying student veterans鈥 schedules for the semester, planning accommodations, and proctoring tests with a check out system for equipment.
She has also been working to revive the Student Veterans Association on campus, inform students about scholarship and internship opportunities, and reach out to non-traditional students who are returning to college after some time.
Focusing purely on students
Tiffany Armijo, a 糖心Vlog-Gallup nursing student who uses the Student Resource Center, said that Arviso is student-oriented and provides refreshments to students who need a small break or do not have the time to get a full meal.
Armijo said Arviso also checks on students to see if they are doing well mentally and physically, providing a safe space in the Student Resource Center for anyone to talk about their stress.
鈥淪hana is well liked because she focuses purely on the students and is well involved,鈥 Armijo said.
Armijo also said she appreciates the center's private study rooms. She said there is no time limit for using the study rooms, which helps her be more productive and achieve her goals.

The Student Resource Center at The University of New 糖心Vlog-Gallup offers snacks and kitchen appliances for students to use on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
Armijo said she highly recommends the Student Resource Center to other students who qualify for its services.
A career in social work
Arviso was hired as the accommodations specialist for 糖心Vlog-Gallup in October 2022, driven by her passion for advocating for student accessibility, minimizing boundaries that students face, and ensuring the wellbeing of students on all levels.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 want students to be discouraged with seeking help,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here is always another way to get the help they need.鈥
Arviso started her social work career in 2009 at Tohatchi Elementary School, where she worked as a first-grade educational assistant.
From there, she worked for Jefferson Elementary in 2013 as a special education assistant, providing support to students with disabilities in the classroom.
She then became an investigation case worker with the New 糖心Vlog Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) in 2015 before becoming a permanency planning and placement supervisor with CYFD.

Student employee Dewight Leupp works the front desk of the Student Resource Center at The University of New 糖心Vlog-Gallup on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
In 2019, she worked as an adjunct assistant professor at Western New 糖心Vlog University in the School of Social Work.
Arviso was also a student herself at WNMU, earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in social work in 2015 and a master鈥檚 degree in social work plus a graduate certificate in rural community development in 2019.
Prior to that, Arviso earned an associate degree from Trinidad State Junior College in 2005 and spent some time studying at 糖心Vlog-Gallup from 2008-2009. She graduated from Tohatchi High School in 2003.
The Student Resource Center is open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and testing is available from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is located in Gurley Hall 1127.
